Rūtilė received the degree of Doctor of Natural Sciences (biology, botany) in 1997 at the Lithuanian Institute of Botany and Vilnius University. Thesis: “Pinewood growth dynamics in Uzpelkiu Tyrelis oligotrophic bog during the Subatlantic period”. Her research interests include tree bioproductivity as an indicator of changes in environment, tree ring and anatomical research of living and historical trees, construction of long-term tree ring chronologies, application to reconstruct different environmental parameters and to date wooden objects, investigation into succession processes in plant communities and history of human-nature interactions. 

She has taken part in several international collaborations including the Lithuanian-Swiss project ”Climate change in peatlands: Holocene record, recent trends and related impacts on biodiversity and sequestered carbon (CLIMPEAT)” (2013-2016), a project supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) ‘Towards a European research and data network for cultural tree-ring studies’, (2010-2013), an EC 5FP project “400 Years of Annual Reconstructions of European Climate Variability Using a High Resolution Isotopic Network –ISONET” (2003 – 200) and an EC INTAS project Nr. 2001-0550 ‘The Solar – Terrestrial Climate Link in the Past Millennia and its Influence on Future Climate’ (2002 – 2006).
