The PhD project “’The Good Border’ – an ethnography of border control in the European Union” (2014-2018) studies the challenges of building a common border system for the European Union (EU) by attending to everyday practices of border control among border guards at the EU borders. Approaching the construction of EU borders as a socio-material process, the project studies the training of personnel, transformation of work routines and introduction of new working methods in the following three settings: the Danish Police Force working to implement EU regulations at the external borders of the EU, Danish police conducting border control at the Danish-German border, and the EU border mission (EUBAM) promoting EU border standards in Moldova and Ukraine. On the basis of this fieldwork, the project discusses how different approaches to border control reflect different ideals for how to demarcate the European territories, which in turn create very different versions of Europe.
