Slavery and Memory In Public Heritage Sites and Museums In Martinique: Old And New Perspectives

Lecture by Dr Dominique Rogers, visiting professor of the "In The Same Sea" project at the Saxo Institute.

Although Martinique island was a land of slavery for two centuries, local heritage sites and museums have long struggled to highlight this history, and in particular the specific experience of enslaved men and women. This lecture will discuss this situation, highlighting recent changes, particularly around the Pagerie estate and the Anse Bellay site, but also presenting old choices whose logic remain widespread. It will try to explain the evolutions and take into account individual initiatives and institutional choices.

After the lecture there will be time for questions and a small reception.
