RESEARCH PROFILE: Interdisciplinary research that combines molecular genetics, genomics and biotechnology with classical breeding of crop plants in order to meet the demand for yield, quality and low input under changing climate conditions. To enable this, a range of plant genetic resources was developed, including genotyped collections of barley, wheat, pea and carrots, as well as mutant populations in these species. A platform, using conventional quantitative genetics and molecular marker technology with complementing approaches of QTL analysis and genome-wide association scan (GWAS), are used for analysis of complex traits. This will enable genomic selection and New Breeding Technologies such as site-directed mutagenesis. Currently, the genomic tools are explored for biotic and abiotic stress traits, quality traits and production traits. The main research activities are quality and production of crop plants taken the stress caused by combination of CO2 and temperature into consideration. The activities within these topics are integrated by development and use of plant genetic resources and use of pre-breeding technologies including genetic transformation.
