Current research

Title of PhD project: The Ghost of Appeasement: The role of appeasement in U.S. security policy during the Cold War.

My PhD project (2022–2025) is a research cooperation between the Saxo Institute (University of Copenhagen) and the Institute for Strategy and War Studies (ISK) at the Royal Danish Defence College (RDDC/FAK). This project explores the role(s) of the concept of appeasement in American cold war policies from 1947 to 1989. The project will attempt to clarify how the concept of appeasement evolved from its seemingly positive origins to become a overwhelmingly derogatory term following World War II due to the British appeasement policy of the 1930s. This forms the background for an analysis of how the concept of appeasement was used in American cold war foreign policies: how shifting administrations used appeasement to justify their policy decisions related to the Soviet Union and their communist allies, and the role of appeasement and the Munich analogy in in the political and public debate related to U.S. foreign policy. The main project supervisor is Associate Professor Morten Rasmussen (PhD, SAXO Institute) with Niels Bo Poulsen (PhD, head of ISK) as associate supervisor. The project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF).
